Fuel tank Status

I brought the fuel tanks out to the hangar so that I could unwrap them. For the most part, they are in good shape. The only visible shipping damage I could see was lower, inner skin corner got bent. This was on the tank that did not have the white foam edge protection. Will have my next door neighbor look at it, but I think it will be easy to fix and is on the bottom.

Fuel Tanks Arrived

The new fuel tanks arrived yesterday, well packed & look OK; but I have not fully unpacked them yet. Today I’ll take them out to the hangar and check them over.

New Fuel Tanks Enroute

I was able to get a set of new fuel tanks (built by Evan Johnson a couple of years ago), from a person whose son never got to use them. These are RV-6 fuel tanks, undrilled, with oversize skins, standard pickup tubes (non-aerobatic), and float senders.

This will enable me to move forward with the existing wings (not pretty but they have 2000 hours of flight on them). The tanks were a key log in the log jam. They will need some fitting but nothing like building new tanks.

New Fuel Tanks

I think I may have found some new RV-6 fuel tanks. They are in Lake Tahoe. That would allow me to keep the current wings & the plan would be: 1. Get current plane flying, but safely 2. Build new plane the way I want it.

I am re-doing the test fits of center sections for one wing set against spars of another wing set. This is to determine chances of replacing old wings with new wings. All of the wings have Phlogiston spars, factory built & factory match drilled. I understand Phlogiston used a jig prior to 1995 and then CNC drilling after 1995.

I’m re-doing this as when I first checked I had the center section(s) upside down. The flange is away from the spar, not around the spar.

Here are the results of center section B against spars C (as defined previously:

Center B – Spar B Right – Fit A+ (perfect fit)


Center B – Spar B Left - Fit A+ (perfect fit)


Center B – Spar C Left – Fit A (almost perfect fit)


Center B – Spar C Right – Fit A (almost perfect fit)

Wing Exchange

Trying several test fits of different center sections and splice plates to the different wing spar so as to judge changes of easy wing change out.

For these trial fits, will use these letters:

A- Current wings on the plane, to be taken off
B- Set of wings, splice plates, center section, Circa 1991
C- Set of wings, splice plates, center section, Circa 2000, the ones that I plan to use on the plane.

Here is splice plate B fitted to spar C, very good fit!


Center section B fitted to spar, very good fit!


So, I’m encouraged at this point. Only the outer most holes are a little off.
